As part of our theme, Primary 5 have been learning all about the mummification process and we explored how to mummify an apple. We had to cut an apple into two pieces, covering one with baking soda and salt and leaving the other piece uncovered. We then wrote a range of instructions on how to mummify different fruit, linking to our creative writing topic ‘Instructional Writing’. We also made predictions as to what we thought might happen to the two pieces of fruit. We soon discovered that the apple left uncovered rotted and went brown very quickly, whereas our covered piece of apple was preserved. A fabulous experiment to explain the process of mummification!
